The certified Master Groomer: Is it worth it?

By Michell Evans
August 31, 2016

“Dear Michell, I have been grooming dogs for many years.  recently I had a new groomer start working at my salon who is interested in getting certified.  I am trying to decide if I am going to get involved.  I say, I have been grooming all this time without it, why do it now?  Does anyone really care if I am certified?  I already have loyal customers who respect me.  What’s in it for me?”  – Mandy K.

As you mature in your career, you look for ways to work smarter, not harder. certification is a simple way to do that. The credential of being a certified groomer is one of the simplest come-backs you can offer to the questions, “Why are you raising your prices?” or “Why are your prices higher than the shop down the street?” consider raising your price with each passed phase of your certification.

Ask yourself, would some outside critiques help improve my styles? often groomers have no idea if their styles are correct. They learned from a groomer who learned from a groomer who taught them to do it this way and so that is how it is done. but is it? Your clients seem happy, but could they be impressed by a better style? could you raise your prices and do one less dog per day for the same income?

Another great reason to go through a certification process is to break the monotony of grooming. You say you have been grooming for many years. Going through a certification process could put new wind in your sails for your work.Certification gives you more to offer to your clients. The learning process is the whole point of any certification. The knowledge is what gives the piece of paper its value. The things that you learn from your studies and practice grooms is where the improvement comes from. You will be a better groomer after certifying. It is pretty much impossible not to be. Your clients will notice the difference in the quality of your grooming and in your confidence. This usually translates into better tips!

One of the most common misconceptions about certifying is that YOU are somehow being judged. This is absurd. Your groom is being judged, not you. Your certifier frankly does not have the authority nor desire to judge you as a person. They look at the groom and determine if the haircut is correct or in need of improvement. That is all.

As long as your head is in the sand about your grooming, your styles will not improve. The only way to know that you need improvement, and where, is to get some suggestions from someone who knows to guide you in the right direction. certification offers this. look at your critique as a tool to know where you need improvement. once you know better, you will do better.

Another misconception is that you will pass all of your exams on the first try. Be prepared to re–take a few of your exams.  It is not uncommon to find out that you are not on the right track with your styles, prep-work, and/or techniques. Your critiques will help you the second time around. Also, after you have taken one written exam, you will have a much better idea of what the questions are like and what to study for the next exam. Re-takes are the absolute best judge of your improvement!

There are several major certifying agencies in the United States; national dog Groomers association of America, international professional Groomers Incorporated, and the international society of Canine Cosmetology to name a few. They are all pretty much the same concept. There are a series of written exams and practical exams. They all have membership fees, study materials to purchase, workshops to attend, and exam fees to be paid.  There are new certifying agencies and programs popping up, like the AKC safety In the salon Certification, and don’t forget cat grooming certification too!

It is so worth it, Mandy!✂

I am a multi-Best-In-Show and Best-All-Around groomer. I am the recipient of many Barkleigh Honors Awards. I am a Silver and Gold medalist for GroomTeam USA. I am the winner of show dog Groomer of the Year. I am an educator for Andis Clipper Company. I have been teaching as The grooming Tutor since 2000. and I groom to make a living, just like you. Holiday 2012: Can you foster a lonely cat for the holidays?

Our cats will spend the holidays surrounded by those who love them, in a warm home, with full tummies and plenty of toys. That’s quite a contrast to how shelter cats will spend their holidays. For them, they’re not going to be any different from any other day spent waiting for that one human who will rescue them and give them a forever home.

To help make the holidays brighter for some of these shelter cats, Petfinder.com is sponsoring its annual Foster A Lonely Pet For The holidays program, and asks you to open your heart and home to a cat from a shelter or rescue group this holiday season. For a lot more information and a list of participating shelters and rescue groups, please check out Petfinder.com. staff and volunteers at each organization will be available to answer questions about the fostering process and help select a pet who will be a good match for the foster family’s lifestyle.

First created in 2009, the Foster A Lonely Pet For The holidays program was inspired by Greg Kincaid’s book and movie, A pet dog named Christmas, about a young man who sets out to convince his community to participate in a local animal shelter’s inaugural “Adopt a pet dog for Christmas Program.” Kincaid just released a sequel to this immensely popular book, A Christmas Home, which picks up the story when Todd, the hero of the first book, is twenty-four years old and working at a local animal shelter.

Would you consider fostering a cat for the holidays?

If fostering is not an option for you, I’ll have information for you next week on other ways you can help brighten the holidays for shelter cats.

I would love to do this, but I’m terrified I wouldn’t give it back!! plus my person Diego is very much “this is my house”. So regrettably I can not be a foster parent. but I do donate to my local shelters!

I absolutely understand Rose’s position … but we’ve observed that even a furlough of a week can help out with kennel anxiety in some cats. typically the volunteers at our shelter will do this and the cat comes back less irritable and with a better chance of finding that permanent forever home.

I absolutely agree with you, Lisa, which is why I used to rotate my cats in and out of the Petsmart adoptions area. As Ingrid said, it absolutely depends on the personality of the individual cat, and the rescue group must know which cats would do well with a break and which ones would not.

We would love to but I’m the jealous kind and we don’t have room to keep a foster separate from me. I nearly ripped the last cat that came in her apart. My aunt fosters up to 20 cats at a time.

As someone who has been in cat rescue a long time, and who currently has 20 foster felines (17 kittens and the 3 mama cats who gave birth to them), I am not sure that a lot of cats would benefit from being fostered for the holidays, not like dogs would. Dogs are a whole different energy, social, adaptable, comfortable nearly anywhere. Not true of cats. They take time to depend on and adjust, for the most part. maybe the hope is that the foster family will adopt the cat, of COURSE, but I would only recommend you “foster a lonely cat for the holidays” if the fostering can to continue AFTER the holidays and until the cat gets adopted into its forever home. I mean, how would a cat feel after being freed from his display cage and getting to take pleasure in a home, starting to feel like he was adopted, and then being “rejected” and returned to the cage?

Back when I was with a rescue group who had space in one of the Petsmart adoption areas, I rotated my cats out frequently, and none of my cats stayed in Petsmart a lot more than 9 days (Saturday through the following Sunday to give them 2 weekends and one work week to get adopted). As a group, each member had access to at a lot of two cages, so it was easy to do, and better for the cats. The short-termers got adopted, and the long termers knew they would come “home” in a week or so, plus their foster mommies (us) were there frequently, so they did not feel abandoned. and some of them came home to us and stayed forevernull

Happiness Is The Cat’s Meow

how many of you bought Christmas presents for your cats, only to have them turn up their little noses at them, or play with them once or twice, and then ignore them? I’ve done this more than I care to admit. I don’t even know why I even buy Allegra and Ruby toys. Our cat playroom (known in most homes as the family room) is already filled with more cat products than your average pet store! but there’s just something about Christmas that makes me want to get them something special, wrap it for them, unwrap it with them, and, each year, hope that this time, it’s going to be something they’re really going to like.

Well, it finally happened. I hit the jackpot with the Cat’s Meow toy. Whoever designed this toy definitely understands cats. This clever toy features a “mouse” on the end of a wand that is attached to a motor and covered by a yellow round cloth. The mouse goes around in a circle, with only the “tail” peeking out from under the fabric. The motor randomly changes speed and direction, and won’t stop even when the cat pounces and “catches” the mouse.

The girls absolutely love this toy. When I first set it out, Ruby started to play with it immediately. Allegra, being the more cautious of the two, watched from a slight distance. It took her about 15 minutes before she started to bat at the moving mouse, but once she got the hang of it, she had a blast. The girls played together with the toy for over an hour on Christmas Eve, and probably would have kept playing all night if I had left the toy out. When I brought it back out Christmas morning, they went right back to it, and have done so every time I’ve brought it out since.

The toy seems to be reasonably well made. Time will tell how long it lasts. It uses three C batteries, and at the rate the girls are using it, it will probably go through a lot of batteries, but to me, that’s a small price to pay for the happiness this toy is bringing them, and me. watching them have fun with this toy was my best Christmas present this year.

Enjoy watching the girls play with their new toy!

The Cat’s Meow is available from Amazon and other retailers. It does not come with batteries, so make sure you have C batteries at the ready.

Mews and Nips will return next Saturday.

i can not find specifications about this toy like how much power it uses a c batterty ranges in mah up to 10000mah.so im asking in one 30 min cycle lets say at the fastest speed how many mah does that use. this knowledge would be valuable it determining the kind of c battery bought. rechargable is the best way to go i see this in comments and reviews so if all go well once i recieve it and try it i will get rechargable c batteries.for now i have ordered the amazon brand batteries.but im wondering for knowledge in the future when i buy batteries again this will let me make a better decesion on which ones and kind i want alkaline is the best but i cant find any information on how much power amperage or anything that this toy uses.im assuming this may be because of varying speeds and different batteries.so how long would a 2500mah battery last on high speed 30 min in this toy or how many mah does it use on high for 30 min.please help thank you.

It’s good to hear all the success stories about this cat toy; however, I was concerned to read the post about the danger to long-haired kitties. I read lots of negative customer comments on Amazon.com and so will not be purchasing it for my kitties. On your recommendation, I did get them a DaBird which is terrific to use before breakfast & dinner — in the wild they have to chase that bird down before they get it handed to them in a warmed ceramic dish!

My cats always get toys for Christmas. I bought them ‘The Cat’s Meow” last October. My spouse and I saw the commercial so I bought it for them at my local grocer. My oldest cat played with it one night. My younger cat loves playing with it and loves to sit on it while it is on. She goes berserk trying to catch the mouse. It is funny to watch the mouse bump her in the butt when snullnull

Dog Adoption Labrador Retriever guideline mix

Here at Puppy In training were back advocates of pet dog adoption.  It’s been a while considering that I talked about the Cuddly Canines Rescue and as lots of of you already know I used to volunteer as a foster parent for Cuddly Canines.  I’m sure I’ll volunteer again in the future when I have a lot more complimentary time in my schedule.  Anyhow, I went ahead and checked out their site to take a look at the puppies and dogs they have for adoption.  It looks like their web site is under maintenance, but they still have all their adoptable dogs posted at petfinder.com.
One litter of dogs caught my attention…the Labrador Retriever guideline Mix.  It looks like they have four lab guideline mixes from the same litter.  The one that caught my attention was a little female puppy named Madison with a heart shaped marking on her left side.  Take a look at the picture:

See the great heart shaped mark on her side.  It kind of reminds me of the story about the little puppy named Heart-kun.  another heart shaped marked puppy.

If you’d like to see the other puppies in the Labrador Retriever guideline mix litter than check out the Cuddly Canines web site and check out their list of puppies.  If you’re interested in adoption then check out their Cuddly Application for pet dog adoptions.

It’s important for us to take our guide dog puppies in training out and about exposing them to different people as well as different situations.  Dublin and I rode the metrolink to San Clemente back in Episode 7 – Puppy training Ride.  Today in Episode 14 we had the opportunity to once again ride the metrolink train, but this time we took it north to the Union station in Los Angeles, CA.  Not only did we ride the train, but we also had the opportunity to ride the tram and bus on our way to the universal City Walk…you could call it a “Transportation Puppy training Day!”
We found our train, tram, and bus riding experience to the universal City walk to be invaluable.  It’s very important to expose our guide dog puppies to public transportation as it’s one of our pups likely modes of transportation when they become working guide dogs.
Anyhow enough jabber…on with the show!!!

I hope you’re enjoying my terrific camera work of the incoming train and the headless Dublin ? Anyhow…welcome to the latest episode of Puppy In training TV

Guide dog Puppy training Starring DUBLIN With Linus Aussie Shepherd Rescue also Colby The Human and Stetson career changed guide Dog
That train you just saw speeding by was the Metrolink. We hopped on the Metrolink in Orange with our GDA pals and headed off for an adventure to the universal City walk in Los Angeles.
In episode 7 we took the metrolink south to San Clemente and visited the beach and walked the pier. this time we took the train north to the Union station in LA.
After exiting the train we did a head count. Yuki…Check, Dublin…Check, Baron…Check, Wriley…Check! then we headed through the tunnels to meet our tour guide.
All of our pups did really well riding the train and walking through the train station. As you can see and hear their are tons of strange sights and sounds not too mention the different smells.

Our second leg of the trip was to hop on the tram. It was a little bit cramped in their with people and pups, but Dublin got comfortable in a down-stay.
After exiting the tram we had a terrific opportunity to walk up a long flight of stairs. As you can see Dublin was a little bit eager, so I did my best to slow him down and keep him in a nice heel position.
Once we reached the top of the stairs we saw a sign to our final destination the universal City Walk, However, we still had to take the third leg in our public transportation training trip…a short bus ride to take up the hill.
After a train ride, a tram ride, and a bus ride we made it and gave our pups a chance to pose out in front of the famous universal Studios rotating globe.
The universal City walk was pretty crowded with people with lots of noise and activities going on. Our first destination was the Karl Strauss Brewing company for a bite to eat.
After relaxing and having a bit of food we came downstairs and let the puppies hang out by this interesting water fountain.
As I mentioned the universal City walk was crowded! but there was tons of different things for the pups to see, smell, and hear.

A giant Gorilla…A giant Guitar….Some crazy Dancers…And Skydivers floating around in a giant tube. now those are some things you don’t see everyday!
Baron even got to check out a little yapping puppy.
On the way out Dublin thought it would be a good idea to hang out by the Sparky’s mini Donuts….so we went ahead and bought of few…Sorry Dublin donuts are for the humans…
After a long day we started our bus, tram, and train ride back home.
When we finally got back on the metrolink Dublin absolutely zonked out. then when we got in the automobile he squished his head between my backpack and the chair and started snoring away.
Thanks for joining us on our Train, Tram, and Bus ride to the universal City Walk. We’ll see you next time!
Our final thoughts On Trains, Trams, Buses, and Puppies
You may have noticed in the video that Dublin was a tad bit eager.  In fact, he was probably on his worst behavior, constantly pulling and trying to move out in front of me throughout the day.  Fortunately, about half way through the day Dublin started behaving more like a normal guide dog puppy in training.  However, today’s trip to the universal City walk was definitely one of Dnull

Getting Your spring Groom On

springtime is lastly here. After many chilly months of withstanding the snow, as well as less regular lingering outdoors, pet parents as well as their pets are delighted to see the sunshine as well as spend more time bonding, playing as well as doing what they do best…having fun! just like all great things, some precautions should be taken as you as well as your pet delve into springtime as well as out of the snowy mess, beginning with getting your pet groomed for the occasion.

When it comes to necessary spring grooming sessions, Christine DeFilippo, Owner/Producer of Intergoom, says, “Grooming salons will always have those specific clients who want their dogs looking excellent all of the time as well as can pay for that luxury.  The vast majority of pet owners are coming off a winter full of snow as well as snow removal charges, as well as are looking for a simple, clean clip without any elegant extras added to their grooming bills.  In other words – clip it short as well as do not spend time trying to salvage hair that has ended up being matted from playing in the snow!” She notes, “Short-haired breeds requirement regular grooming, whatever the season” as well as “long-coated breeds (ie. the Bearded Collie, Newfoundland, Briard) requirement to get a great medical spa day in a grooming salon to get all the dead coat out, revitalizing the skin as well as providing a healthy coat sheen.”

So assist your pet feel good, look excellent as well as stay healthy with these grooming tips, that will make them look so fancy, neighbors will turn heads:

Cleanliness with bath Time

In the exact same method pet parents feel amazing when they are clean, pets likewise enjoy the feeling of being clean. Cats are generally extremely great at grooming themselves, costs as much as 50% of their day cleaning themselves as well as other cats. Dogs, on the other hand, requirement a great deal of assist in the cleaning department, as they generally aren’t as thorough. depending upon your dog’s activities, they may requirement a bath every 1-3 weeks, utilizing a moderate shampoo as well as doggie dryer, to prevent skin irritation. For dogs that ended up being overexcited, putting a toy in the bath can assist them focus, as well as a bath mat can prevent slipping. accept the season as well as go with pastel-colored toys to liven the experience.

Christina Pawlosky, Oster® expert Master Groomer, adds some bath time tips, “The truth is most pet parents do not get their pets’ clean skin clean.  It is difficult to get shampoo as well as water with the coat to the skin so the dead skin cell, oils as well as debris can be washed away.  I suggest two things: either get a quick bath system or get a tub as well as try soaking the pet.  By putting water as well as shampoo together, you will break up the oils as well as debris quicker as well as truly get the dog clean to the skin with less rinsing.  This will likewise loosen the dead coat making it easier to clean out, provided it is not already matted.”

Visual Checkups

Get up close as well as personal when grooming as well as be sure to do a with visual inspect around your feline or dog’s body, moving fur as needed to be sure nothing is missed. inspect for anything that might be a indication of illness or infection. Swelling, cuts, heat, scratches, limping, temperament change, in addition to routine inspection of eyes/teeth as well as ears can save a medical condition from worsening (such as ear infection), as well as will ideally catch any type of issues before they ended up being serious. A excellent time to do visual check-ups is right before you slip your infant into an adorable springtime attire for a stroll around town.
