Pain management for arthritic cat

Dr. Bahr,

I really appreciate the time and proficiency you give us kitty parents in answering our questions and concerns!

My Maggie is a 12-year-old long hair cat with arthritis. I’ve been giving her worksSOwell 1-TetraDecanol complex (which I saw recommended on this site) and that seems to have been helping, but of course her arthritis is getting worse. I took her to her vet a couple days ago, and the vet gave me Onsior for the pain. It worked but I believe it’s just supposed to be given just for a short period of time, and it’s pricey anyway. Do you know of anything else I can give her or do for her to help ease her pain?

She also had a mammary tumor removed a few weeks ago. The vet said she didn’t take it all out, and now it’s getting larger again. I really, really hate to put Maggie through that surgery again, especially at her age. but I guess that’s a decision that only I can make. In the meantime, if I can do something to ease her arthritis pain, that would be a definite bonus.

Thank you so much, Doctor! – – Alice Kemp

Hi Alice,

Maggie is lucky to have a guardian, like you, who is aware of her arthritic condition and I am happy to hear that you are looking for ways to help alleviate her pain.

There is no one “magic bullet” for pain control and it typically takes a multi-modal approach to keeping arthritic pain managed. If Maggie is carrying extra weight, then a carefully controlled weight loss program will help her immensely and should be the first place to start. In addition to the Onsior and supplement you are giving her, it might be helpful to investigate cold laser treatments and/or acupuncture, CBC, and the Assisi loop for additional relief.

Take an assessment of your home environment to see if there are ways in which you can help her navigate her surroundings easier. This would include adding ramps to the bed, couch, and favorite sleeping places to eliminate the need for her to jump up or down from these places. low sided litter boxes help too. since warmth is often helpful with alleviating arthritic pain, you may also consider placing pet warming blankets out for her to lay on.

I hope you find some of these suggestions helpful.  let me know which ones work for Maggie.

Black spot above nose

Hi Dr. Bahr,
My male ginger is 5 yrs old. He got a black flat spot right above his nose a few weeks ago. it looked like an ink smudge spot. then it got darker and then disappeared completely. The black spot came back again like a week later, then disappeared again, very strange. could it be the salmon food he’s eating? Idk, it seemed like that’s when it appears. very strange. thank you. – Terri

Hi Terri,

Thank you so much for taking time to write in about your kitty’s nose. Unfortunately, you did not provide enough information for me to really give you any good advice. but the fact that it goes away on its own is a good sign and I would not be too concerned about it unless it continues to recur. If it does show back up again, take pictures, keep a good log as to when it appeared and disappeared, and get your boy checked out by a veterinarian.

It is strange indeed and if you find out what is going on, please let me know.

Sudden trouble breathing

Hi Dr. Bahr,

I have a question.

This year our cat ‘Dee’ passed away. it all happened rather quickly, with her suddenly having trouble breathing (the dyspnea type), but no other symptoms (such as congestion). The emergency pet hospital vets found out that her problems were being caused by air getting next to her lungs. (Aftnullnull

Introducing Oriental Freestyle to Your clients

By Michell Evans
August 31, 2019
“Hi Michell, I have been trying to master the art of Oriental Freestyle grooming. I have a few clients that truly like the style however their dogs are not always great candidates. I likewise have clients whose dogs are perfect for the style however the owners don’t like the idea.

Any advice on exactly how to perfect the style as well as getting clients to try it? Thanks, Linda”

Hi Linda. Oriental freestyle grooming is great deals of fun. I like it since it difficulties me to groom outside the box. showing clients photos of dogs in Oriental freestyle trims that look similar to their dog is a excellent method to offer it. The Web has a riches of pictures to look trough with your clients. think about keeping a binder or a tablet with pictures to show your clients when discussing styles. You can include many styles, not just Oriental freestyle. think about asking your preferred Oriental freestyle artists on Facebook as well as Instagram if you may utilize their pictures to show your clients.

Often clients don’t like the style since the body is as well short as well as the legs are as well long. These things can quickly be changed into what many phone call a puppy cut, teddy bear trim or even a shave–off. You may likewise requirement to make decisions for the body as well as leg coat because of the dog’s structure. If the dog is not a natural beauty, you can change the style to make the dog look fitter, younger as well as healthier.

Overweight dogs, dogs with great deals of lumps as well as bumps, thin coat as well as skin problems are examples of dogs who may benefit from an modified style. keep in mind that the style commonly integrates clothing. You may suggest—in the situation of a extremely regrettable looking dog—that they keep a sweatshirt on it.

The head is the most unique part of many Oriental freestyle trims. owners tend to like these trims since they are extremely animated, puppy–like as well as short around the mouth as well as eyes.

When executing the trim, keep these nine typical features of the Oriental Freestyle head in mind:

The muzzle is groomed to appear separate from the skull.
The width of the muzzle is groomed to appear wider than the outside corner of the eye.
The top of the nose is not shaved however trimmed to produce the shape of the muzzle.
The chin coat is trimmed extremely short.
Any coat sticking out past the tip of the nose is trimmed short.
The eyes are totally open. No bangs or bubbles.
The ears are accentuated as well as exaggerated in some way.
Cheeks are most commonly trimmed short.
Color accents, bows as well as yarn are commonly utilized to accentuate facial features.

Remember that the longer coat on the legs that is a typical characteristic of the style will requirement more regular grooming. This is a great source of revenue for the salon. likewise keep in mind that these are specialty trims; it takes much skill to research study as well as properly execute these styles so be sure to fee accordingly.

Happy Grooming!—Michell  ✂️

We raise puppies for guide Dogs of America and Dublin and I both attend our monthly meeting at Orange county group in Anaheim Hills, CA.  As a group we plan one organized outing to help our puppy raisers work on their guide canine puppy training, visit places, and do things they might not typically do on their own.
We recently had the opportunity to go on a Scavenger hunt with our OCGDA group at fashion Island in Newport Beach.  ten guide canine Puppies In training participated in this years Scavenger hunt including Dublin’s sister Denali.
We all arrived at fashion Island around 10am and split up into two teams.  Each team was given a set of clues and had to resolve each clue by going to different stores in the mall, having dogs carry out basic obedience and socialization, and maneuvering through different areas of the mall (walking up and down stairs, riding the elevator, and going to the koi pond).

As I discussed we had a Scavenger hunt at fashion Island in Newport Beach. We had 10 guide canine puppies in training at the event and we split up into two teams. Each team received a set of clues and had to resolve problems, carry out tasks, and visit stores throughout the mall.
We were in charge of making the clues so our good friend Anne took Dublin through the Scavenger hunt while we played scorekeeper.
We did our best to ask each handler and their puppy to carry out basic obedience and manuever through every day obstacles like walking up the stairs on a loose leash.

We also incorporated a “get busy” area with one of the clues
We were also lucky to have Dublin’s sister Denali join us!
Fashion Island has a great koi pond and some of the pups really wanted to swim with the fish.
All the pups had a chance to ride the elevator and also sit quietly at the bookstore.
There’s Dublin and Anne trying to figure out the next clue. and as you can see Anne is using the H204K9 water bottle and NEOSLING.
The fountains were pretty noisy and in this clip the pups had to lay in a down stay while their puppy raisers snapped a pic.
We were continuously on the relocation because the team to finish first got perk points.
Here come Dublin and Baron. I think Dublin recognizes me he really wants to say hello.
And here’s team kelly over at Macys getting much more practice on the elevator.

And getting another down stay in front of the bed at Macy’s.
Muttropolis had an lovable Kissing booth and Kelly posed for a picture the puppies also did their best statue pose outside next to the lab Statue…can you tell which pup isn’t real?
Here’s another pose with a smaller dalmation statue.
And this is a great shot of team Yellow canine in front of a vending cart. Can you spot Dublin in the pack?
There was a lot going on throughout the day as you saw in all the video clips. We finally had a chance to get lunch and the pups were all exhausted and unwinded under the table. team Kelly beat out team yellow canine by a hair…We got one final shot with Dublin in front of the big fountain and headed home.
Hey Guys!  thanks for joining us for this episode of Puppy In training TV.  Dublin had a great time today at the Scavenger Hunt.  He got to hand out with his sister Denali and he also got to work with a different puppy raiser today.  once again, thanks for joining us and we’ll see you next time.

Final thoughts on the OCGDA Scavenger hunt 2011
We were observers today and not so much working with Dublin and his training.  Our good friend Anne had the opportunity to work with Dublin and it’s good for him to get used to training with a different puppy raiser.
We also delighted in seeing Dublin’s sister Denali who is doing very well in her puppy training.
Overall we discovered many of the dogs doing great job as we viewed all the puppy raisers work with their puppies to walk politely up the stairs, stay calm in the elevator, work on self control, lay quietly under the table during lunch, carry out sit-stays and down-staynull

The screens are lovely but, everything I have ever checked out about cats as well as litter boxes has instructed to make sure boxes are found in a method that provides a feline full view of anything potentially coming toward their box.Using that screen, avoids say, a feline seeing one more feline coming to scare/intimidate. I honestly believe cats do not want litter boxes hidden away, people do.

Abandoned pet dog found in California with the words “Free” and “I need a home” Written on Fur

Libby by means of Shannon Bettencourt@facebook

Last week in Benecia California Shannon Bettencourt found an abandoned pet dog with the words “free” and “I need a home” written on its fur with black marker. She found the pet dog after work on July 3rd. The pooch was sitting alone in the middle of a sidewalk near a tree , afraid and shaking.

Bettencourt feared that the pet dog was going to seized by animal control so she made a decision to take her home. She nicknamed the pet dog Libby, short for Liberty. Bellencourt said she was only planning on keeping the pup overnight but ended up bonding with the animal and has now made plans to adopt her. She says the animal seems to be healthy and well trained which makes it a lot more puzzling as to why the pet dog was abandoned in the first place.

Update
A woman has come forward stating she is the abandoned dogs owner. On Wednesday a woman from Yolo county drove to the Benicia police department to verify that she is the dog’s owner. She supplied photos, vet records, and experience testimony. She said she doesn’t know how the pet dog got out of her yard and had nothing to make with the dogs abandonment.

Does your dog like belly rubs? most dogs do, as well as some like belly scrubs so much they’ll really demand them.

So why do dogs like belly scrubs anyway? Dogs like belly scrubs just since they feel good. It likewise sets off a specific reaction in their brain that responds to the stimulation of hair follicles. professionals believe that dogs like petting, as well as belly scrubs in particular, since the stroking of hair is linked to social grooming.

When your dog rolls over on their back as well as offers you their belly it’s a indication that your dog trusts you, not just a indication of submission. stomach scrubs feel great as well as they don’t mind showing you this vulnerability for a nice old fashioned belly rub. The truth that the habits is submissive does not mean that the dog is enjoying the petting any type of less. seems like a quite fair trade off right?

A dog can reveal more with his tail in seconds than his owner can reveal with his tongue in hours. – unknown Author

The scientific reason Why Dogs like belly Rubs

While there may not seem to be anything scientific about a belly rub there has been evidence supporting why our dogs like them so much. Dogs as well as other mammals have a specific brain neuron that responds to the stimulation of hair follicles. That reaction assists explain why our dogs like being pet so much.

The reaction is accomplished with the stroking of hair, so it can make belly scrubs uniquely satisfying to your dog. Why mammals established this special reaction is unclear, though evidence suggests that the stroking of hair motivated great hygiene with social grooming.

If Your dog Doesn’t like belly scrubs Don’t force It

While most dogs tend to enjoy a nice belly rub it should never be forced. If you force a dog onto his back you’re likely going to produce other anxious behaviors. There are lots of methods to gain a dogs trust, as well as by forcing a dog to do something they’re not comfortable with you’re going to lose trust in the process.

If you’re unsure about your dogs comfort level inspect to see exactly how tense he looks. A relaxed dog will look loose as well as floppy. If your dog shows any type of indications of being uncomfortable such as tucking his tail between his legs or hunching up his body stop as well as move away.

If your dog moves away or seems to relax when you stop that’s a great signal that he’s not comfortable with the belly rub. If he wants more he’ll let you know; dogs have a excellent method of asking us of what they want.

Why Do Dogs Kick Their Legs When getting a belly Rub?

What about all that leg kicking? great deals of us refer to it as ‘the tickle spot,’ that special location you scratch on your dogs belly to make his legs twitch as well as kick. It isn’t really tickling at all, it’s an involuntary response.

It’s called the scratch reflex as well as it’s just like the reflex test a physician performs on your knee; it’s utilized on dogs to test for spinal or nerve problems. It activates nerves under his skin which are linked to the spinal cord. It relays a message for him to kick his legs to get rid of the irritant. just like when their skin twitches when a bug lands on their back.

The scratch reflex established in dogs to assist protect them against irritants on their bodies. Collections of neural pathways link to your dogs spinal cord – when triggered they send the message to the brain to kick. It’s an automatic response that assists keep your dog away from risk – the spinal cord tells the leg to kick before the mindful brain makes the decision. It’s a matter of self preservation.

So when Fido starts to kick his leg when you’re scrubing his belly you’ll understand why – it’s an involuntary response.. That’s not to state that dogs are annoyed by belly rubs, it’s just that their involuntary leg kicking isn’t a indication of them being ticklish.

Dogs shake or kick their legs when you scratch them since of something understood as the scratch reflex. It’s a totally involuntary reaction, which explains why your dog may look as puzzled as you do when it starts to happen. When you scratch or tickle your dog’s belly, it irritates him, much the exact same method that the wind or a bug might. It activates nerves under his skin that are linked to his spinal cord as well as relays a message to his leg muscles to begin an attempt to get rid of the irritant. Of course, you’re the one both providing the “itch” as well as “scratching” it, so it’s a totally pointless act. – animal Planet

To Rub or not to Rub, That is the Question

Not all dogs like getting belly rubs. If your dog isn’t rolling over as well as offering up his belly on his own, possibilities are he’s just not into belly rubs. just like people all dogs are different, as well as there’s no requinull

Benefits of Coconut Oil for Cats

Coconut oil has been huge in human nutrition for rather some time. commonly marketed as a superfood, the special combination of fatty acids in coconut oil may have anti-inflammatory as well as anti-bacterial properties as well as improve the immune system. I’ve been getting a great deal of concerns about whether these benefits apply to cats as well.

Fatty acids as well as cats

Cats only requirement to acquire two necessary fatty acids from their diet: linoleic acid (LA) as well as arachadonic acid (AA), both of which can be discovered in meat. Theoretically, cats can synthesize all other fatty acids from those two. adult cats can benefit from lots of other fats as well as oils for ideal health, especially animal fats such as EPA as well as DHA, although they aren’t necessary. kitties do need DHA for the advancement of the tissues in the brain as well as retina.

How does coconut oil impact cats?

Coconut oil consists of only a about 2% of linoleic  acid. It is mostly made up of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), as well as that’s where the health and wellness benefits come from on the human side.

According to some veterinary experts, MCTs do not taste great to cats. I have not discovered that to be true. Allegra likes coconut oil as a treat “straight up,” as well as I’ve heard lots of reports of feline parents mixing it with food without any issues.

Benefits of coconut oil for cats

If you were to believe whatever you checked out about coconut oil on the internet, you’d believe that there’s nothing this basic oil can’t cure. There are no studies on the benefits of coconut oil in cats that I’m conscious of, however holistic veterinarians have discovered it successful in treating a number of conditions.

I would take declares that coconut oil can remedy cancer as well as thyroid imbalances, contribute to weight loss as well as stop dental illness with a significant grain of salt. However, because of its anti-inflammatory properties, coconut oil has been shown to assist with dermatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, bad bowel absorption, cognitive dysfunction as well as wound healing. It likewise assists improve the immune system, helps digestion as well as enhances skin as well as coat condition when taken internally.

Internal as well as topical utilize of coconut oil

When utilized topically, coconut oil has been shown to speed wound healing in rats, so it stands to reason that it may have the exact same impact on cats. applying a thin layer to a cat’s wound or sore may help. However, keep in mind that anything you put on your feline will a lot of likely be groomed off as well as ingested. Coconut oil is extremely greasy, so you may end up with an oily mess on your furniture as well as rugs even before your feline has a possibility to groom it off.

When provided internally, it’s finest to begin at a extremely low dose as well as work your method up gradually. The normal suggested dose is 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight. I’d begin with 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon as well as slowly boost over a period of a week or two.

Coconut oil is extremely high in fat as well as may not be a great option for cats who are overweight.

Raw Paws organic Virgin Coconut Oil

There are many brands of coconut oil offered (I often utilize it in cooking, it makes a excellent butter substitute!) For utilize as a supplement, look for a therapeutic grade oil, preferably organic, that is sourced responsibly.

We like the Raw Paws brand. Sourced from coconuts naturally grown in the Philippines, it has a shelf life of 2 years, as well as consists of only one ingredient: USDA licensed organic Coconut Oil. It is cold-pressed as well as unrefined, not bleached or deodorized like some more affordable oils.

If you’re not familiar with coconut oil, it’s crucial to comprehend that it will liquefy at 76° F. Whether liquid or solid, the benefits stay the same. I’ve discovered that Allegra likes it much better when it’s melted.

Allegra gets 1/4 teaspoon twice a day. I location it in a little meal as well as she licks it clean within seconds. Some cats will lick it ideal off the spoon.
