Abandoned pet dog found in California with the words “Free” and “I need a home” Written on Fur

Libby by means of Shannon Bettencourt@facebook

Last week in Benecia California Shannon Bettencourt found an abandoned pet dog with the words “free” and “I need a home” written on its fur with black marker. She found the pet dog after work on July 3rd. The pooch was sitting alone in the middle of a sidewalk near a tree , afraid and shaking.

Bettencourt feared that the pet dog was going to seized by animal control so she made a decision to take her home. She nicknamed the pet dog Libby, short for Liberty. Bellencourt said she was only planning on keeping the pup overnight but ended up bonding with the animal and has now made plans to adopt her. She says the animal seems to be healthy and well trained which makes it a lot more puzzling as to why the pet dog was abandoned in the first place.

Update
A woman has come forward stating she is the abandoned dogs owner. On Wednesday a woman from Yolo county drove to the Benicia police department to verify that she is the dog’s owner. She supplied photos, vet records, and experience testimony. She said she doesn’t know how the pet dog got out of her yard and had nothing to make with the dogs abandonment.

Review: Jackson Galaxy comfy cat Napper

A few weeks ago, we examined the Jackson Galaxy Donut cat Bed, and I pointed out in the review that I thought the fabric need to have some magical cat attractant in it because even Allegra, who’s normally slow to adopt anything new, took ideal to it. Well, I’m starting to think that everything in the Jackson Galaxy Collection by Petmate has some sort of magical ingredient – or maybe the magic is simply that the entire collection was created with input from the cat daddy himself. The comfy cat Napper proves my theory.

This little pad features a quilted micro-luxe plush fabric, with a thin layer of foam to make it even softer. It has a non-skid bottom to stop the pad from sliding on hard floors, but unfortunately, it didn’t work that well on carpet. This is undoubtedly not a problem for the cats, but it could be one for the humans if they step on it and it slides out from under your foot, as happened to me a couple of times until I learned to pay attention.

Jackson recommends tossing these pads all around the house as “scent soakers” to help your cats feel confident and secure. If you’re not familiar with the term, scent soakers are items made of soft material that will maintain a cat’s smell. The pads also work as carrier liners and may help to make the carrier a friendlier place by incorporatingthe cat’s own familiar scent.

At 18″ by 13″ inches, these pads are small and lightweight. The entire pad is maker washable.

Allegra and Ruby both liked the comfy cat Napper ideal away, but somehow, Ruby won “napping rights,” at least for now.

The comfy cat Napper is available from Petmate in purple, grey and dark pink.

Does your dog like belly rubs? most dogs do, as well as some like belly scrubs so much they’ll really demand them.

So why do dogs like belly scrubs anyway? Dogs like belly scrubs just since they feel good. It likewise sets off a specific reaction in their brain that responds to the stimulation of hair follicles. professionals believe that dogs like petting, as well as belly scrubs in particular, since the stroking of hair is linked to social grooming.

When your dog rolls over on their back as well as offers you their belly it’s a indication that your dog trusts you, not just a indication of submission. stomach scrubs feel great as well as they don’t mind showing you this vulnerability for a nice old fashioned belly rub. The truth that the habits is submissive does not mean that the dog is enjoying the petting any type of less. seems like a quite fair trade off right?

A dog can reveal more with his tail in seconds than his owner can reveal with his tongue in hours. – unknown Author

The scientific reason Why Dogs like belly Rubs

While there may not seem to be anything scientific about a belly rub there has been evidence supporting why our dogs like them so much. Dogs as well as other mammals have a specific brain neuron that responds to the stimulation of hair follicles. That reaction assists explain why our dogs like being pet so much.

The reaction is accomplished with the stroking of hair, so it can make belly scrubs uniquely satisfying to your dog. Why mammals established this special reaction is unclear, though evidence suggests that the stroking of hair motivated great hygiene with social grooming.

If Your dog Doesn’t like belly scrubs Don’t force It

While most dogs tend to enjoy a nice belly rub it should never be forced. If you force a dog onto his back you’re likely going to produce other anxious behaviors. There are lots of methods to gain a dogs trust, as well as by forcing a dog to do something they’re not comfortable with you’re going to lose trust in the process.

If you’re unsure about your dogs comfort level inspect to see exactly how tense he looks. A relaxed dog will look loose as well as floppy. If your dog shows any type of indications of being uncomfortable such as tucking his tail between his legs or hunching up his body stop as well as move away.

If your dog moves away or seems to relax when you stop that’s a great signal that he’s not comfortable with the belly rub. If he wants more he’ll let you know; dogs have a excellent method of asking us of what they want.

Why Do Dogs Kick Their Legs When getting a belly Rub?

What about all that leg kicking? great deals of us refer to it as ‘the tickle spot,’ that special location you scratch on your dogs belly to make his legs twitch as well as kick. It isn’t really tickling at all, it’s an involuntary response.

It’s called the scratch reflex as well as it’s just like the reflex test a physician performs on your knee; it’s utilized on dogs to test for spinal or nerve problems. It activates nerves under his skin which are linked to the spinal cord. It relays a message for him to kick his legs to get rid of the irritant. just like when their skin twitches when a bug lands on their back.

The scratch reflex established in dogs to assist protect them against irritants on their bodies. Collections of neural pathways link to your dogs spinal cord – when triggered they send the message to the brain to kick. It’s an automatic response that assists keep your dog away from risk – the spinal cord tells the leg to kick before the mindful brain makes the decision. It’s a matter of self preservation.

So when Fido starts to kick his leg when you’re scrubing his belly you’ll understand why – it’s an involuntary response.. That’s not to state that dogs are annoyed by belly rubs, it’s just that their involuntary leg kicking isn’t a indication of them being ticklish.

Dogs shake or kick their legs when you scratch them since of something understood as the scratch reflex. It’s a totally involuntary reaction, which explains why your dog may look as puzzled as you do when it starts to happen. When you scratch or tickle your dog’s belly, it irritates him, much the exact same method that the wind or a bug might. It activates nerves under his skin that are linked to his spinal cord as well as relays a message to his leg muscles to begin an attempt to get rid of the irritant. Of course, you’re the one both providing the “itch” as well as “scratching” it, so it’s a totally pointless act. – animal Planet

To Rub or not to Rub, That is the Question

Not all dogs like getting belly rubs. If your dog isn’t rolling over as well as offering up his belly on his own, possibilities are he’s just not into belly rubs. just like people all dogs are different, as well as there’s no requinull

Confession; I’m A Stripper

By Malissa Diener
October 30, 2017
I confess…I am a stripper. I know, shocking as it may seem, I like to hand strip, roll coats, pluck as well as twist. Whew, feels great to confess that I utilize a stripping knife as well as stripping tools a great deal in my grooming, as well as sometimes even on non-terrier breeds!

I know, it’s so scandalous. however yes, I am that type of groomer girl, the kind that strips on the side to make additional money.

I am going to try as well as persuade you why you should be a stripper, too. I know, you handled to stay away from it this long. So why should you? people will talk, however you will make more money, you will gain a larger as well as different clientele, as well as it will absolutely make you a more in demand groomer/stylist. Remember, not everybody strips so you may be looked at in a different way by your fellow groomers/stylists. They may talk about you behind your back as well as be a bit unfavorable about the new “reputation” you have gained. however when you strip, you can’t ever go back. It becomes your go–to trick weapon on a range of grooms.

Some people are natural pickers. You understand who you are, as I am among you. You’re the person who picks at their scab. You’re the pimple popper; the one buddy that says, “Oh let me get that black head for you”. You can get such a spirit cleansing satisfaction from tweezing, plucking as well as messing with yourself or others. This likewise transfers into our grooming. I am a plucker, a picker, a popper as well as a stripper. There it is, as well as I get a overall euphoria from it.
Advertisements

So, what is hand stripping? most pet groomers don’t offer it or utilize most of the tools to do it. I personally believe it is a lost grooming art like scissoring. however right here is the official meaning on hand stripping a dog’s coat via Google:

Hand–stripping is the process of plucking the outer guard hairs when the coat is “blown”—the top coat is pulled out utilizing fingers or a stripping knife.

Don’t panic—it seems worse than it is! The knife is not utilized to cut however only to pull the hair out, held between the thumb as well as forefinger. Technically Google is correct in the above definition. Remember, I stated technically. now let’s get untechnical as well as let’s get real. most groomers state they don’t strip because:

It is a method reserved for show dogs only.
It is unpleasant to the dog as well as triggers them distress.
It is only for cable haired coated breeds/Terriers.
No pet owner wants their dog stripped, they don’t even understand what it is.

I am going to debunk these four myths:

1. show dogs are not the only dogs that get hand stripped. There are lots of pet owners that want their dogs to look like the breed basic (or as close as we can come to it) as well as they want the coat to retain its natural texture, color as well as general look. I have hand–stripped pure bred dogs as well as mixed breeds—didn’t matter to me. What did matter was that I was able to preserve the integrity of the coat as well as provide the client what they desired in an general style for their pet.

I talk to my clients about what I phone call a Pet Strip. We discuss what they can preserve at house as well as what they want their pet to look like as well as exactly how frequently they want to have the pet groomed. Yes, I fee more for the service, however it is all rolled into my overall grooming cost for that specific dog as well as the services it needs.

2. pain is NOT included in stripping the coat. If you hand strip at the right time, the coat will release from the roots easily. If you are triggering pain or discomfort while doing it, you are doing it wrong. simple as that. Skin must be pulled taut, coat should be filthy (if doing a full, true strip) as well as you can utilize things like ear powder to assist get a great grip. There are about a million different YouTube videos on exactly how to do a hand strip, so I won’t go into directions here. however I have taught the seminar to pet groomers as well as they are always so amazed at exactly how quickly the coat releases when they get the method down. If you are a picker, then you have discovered heaven on a grooming table when you discover to strip.

3. Stripping is not just reserved for Terrier breeds or cable coated breeds. However, they do get this method utilized more than the other breed groups. Some other breeds are Spaniels, Setters, Hounds as well as more. I have utilized my stripping tools on Collies, Samoyeds, Aussies, (yes, double coated breeds) Pugs, as well as every type of mix that I feel the tools will enhance the high quality as well as general look of the coat. Remember, you are utilizing tools. A hammer is just not for getting nails with a board. Be innovative as well as ended up being a believing groomer. Don’t always just reach for the clipper.

4. most pet owners don’t understand what stripping is. Thenull

Benefits of Coconut Oil for Cats

Coconut oil has been huge in human nutrition for rather some time. commonly marketed as a superfood, the special combination of fatty acids in coconut oil may have anti-inflammatory as well as anti-bacterial properties as well as improve the immune system. I’ve been getting a great deal of concerns about whether these benefits apply to cats as well.

Fatty acids as well as cats

Cats only requirement to acquire two necessary fatty acids from their diet: linoleic acid (LA) as well as arachadonic acid (AA), both of which can be discovered in meat. Theoretically, cats can synthesize all other fatty acids from those two. adult cats can benefit from lots of other fats as well as oils for ideal health, especially animal fats such as EPA as well as DHA, although they aren’t necessary. kitties do need DHA for the advancement of the tissues in the brain as well as retina.

How does coconut oil impact cats?

Coconut oil consists of only a about 2% of linoleic  acid. It is mostly made up of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), as well as that’s where the health and wellness benefits come from on the human side.

According to some veterinary experts, MCTs do not taste great to cats. I have not discovered that to be true. Allegra likes coconut oil as a treat “straight up,” as well as I’ve heard lots of reports of feline parents mixing it with food without any issues.

Benefits of coconut oil for cats

If you were to believe whatever you checked out about coconut oil on the internet, you’d believe that there’s nothing this basic oil can’t cure. There are no studies on the benefits of coconut oil in cats that I’m conscious of, however holistic veterinarians have discovered it successful in treating a number of conditions.

I would take declares that coconut oil can remedy cancer as well as thyroid imbalances, contribute to weight loss as well as stop dental illness with a significant grain of salt. However, because of its anti-inflammatory properties, coconut oil has been shown to assist with dermatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, bad bowel absorption, cognitive dysfunction as well as wound healing. It likewise assists improve the immune system, helps digestion as well as enhances skin as well as coat condition when taken internally.

Internal as well as topical utilize of coconut oil

When utilized topically, coconut oil has been shown to speed wound healing in rats, so it stands to reason that it may have the exact same impact on cats. applying a thin layer to a cat’s wound or sore may help. However, keep in mind that anything you put on your feline will a lot of likely be groomed off as well as ingested. Coconut oil is extremely greasy, so you may end up with an oily mess on your furniture as well as rugs even before your feline has a possibility to groom it off.

When provided internally, it’s finest to begin at a extremely low dose as well as work your method up gradually. The normal suggested dose is 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight. I’d begin with 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon as well as slowly boost over a period of a week or two.

Coconut oil is extremely high in fat as well as may not be a great option for cats who are overweight.

Raw Paws organic Virgin Coconut Oil

There are many brands of coconut oil offered (I often utilize it in cooking, it makes a excellent butter substitute!) For utilize as a supplement, look for a therapeutic grade oil, preferably organic, that is sourced responsibly.

We like the Raw Paws brand. Sourced from coconuts naturally grown in the Philippines, it has a shelf life of 2 years, as well as consists of only one ingredient: USDA licensed organic Coconut Oil. It is cold-pressed as well as unrefined, not bleached or deodorized like some more affordable oils.

If you’re not familiar with coconut oil, it’s crucial to comprehend that it will liquefy at 76° F. Whether liquid or solid, the benefits stay the same. I’ve discovered that Allegra likes it much better when it’s melted.

Allegra gets 1/4 teaspoon twice a day. I location it in a little meal as well as she licks it clean within seconds. Some cats will lick it ideal off the spoon.

Study Confirms that dry Food boosts danger of Diabetes for Cats

There are numerous reasons why cats ought to never eat dry food. dry food is the equivalent of junk food for cats, it is the leading cause of many urinary tract problems, as well as it is accountable for the obesity issue among cats. dry food has likewise been implicated as one of the contributing elements to diabetes, which is reaching epidemic proportions. 1 in 50 cats may be affected, with overweight cats being at enhanced risk.

A new research study conducted at the Swedish university of agricultural Sciences confirms that typical weight cats who take in a dry food diet plan are at an enhanced danger of diabetes mellitus.

Normal weight cats who take in a dry food diet plan are at an enhanced danger of diabetes.

Researchers utilized a web-based questionnaire in a case–control study. An invitation to take part was sent to owners of 1,369 diabetic cats as well as 5,363 manage cats. The survey contained concerns associated to the cat’s breed, age, sex, neutering status, body condition, housing, gain access to to the outdoors, activity level, diet, eating behavior, feeding routine, general health, stressful events, other animals in the household, medications, as well as vaccination status.

The reaction rate was 35% for the diabetic group as well as 32% for the manage group. indoor confinement, being a greedy eater, as well as being overweight were connected with an enhanced danger of diabetes. In cats evaluated by owners as being typical weight, there was an association between eating predominantly dry food as well as an enhanced danger of diabetes.

These findings most likely don’t come as a surprise to veterinarians as well as feline guardians who comprehend the connection between diet plan as well as diabetes, however it is motivating to lastly see some solid research study that supports this knowledge.

Obesity is not the only danger element for diabetes.

“Through our research study we discovered that while obesity is a extremely essential as well as popular danger element for diabetes mellitus in cats, there is likewise an enhanced danger of diabetes among normal-weight cats consuming a dry food diet,” Malin Öhlund, DVM, a Ph.D trainee of the department of medical services at the Swedish university of agricultural science as well as lead researcher on the research study told Veterinary method News. “This correlation, compared to normal-weight cats on a wet food diet, is a new as well as fascinating discovering that warrants even more research, as a dry food diet plan is typically fed to cats around the world.”

I’m hoping that this research study will be commonly published as well as motivate feline guardians who are not yet persuaded that cats ought to never eat dry food to rethink the diet plan they feed their feline household members.

You can discover the full research study results here.

While I agree that dry food is doubtful for cats as well as that wet/raw may be the much better choice, this research study does not wrap up or show anything. It is only a summary of survey results sent in by owners, not veterinary professionals, as well as it is not a scientific, medical study. All it states is that even more investigation is warranted. I desire the author to reevaluate their misinterpretation of the research study as well as to look for other sources to support the point.

I question if this holds true for Halo brand. It utilizes none of the “meat meal” or by products nor does it utilize grains.
My cats were increased on grain totally free wet however someday just just refused to it any type of type of wet food. Drives me crazy as I understand wet food is much better for them. perhaps next step will be to try raw.

It’s true for all dry foods, regardless of brand. Carbs are carbs. Grains are not the only source of carbs, as well as numerous producers of grain-free diets substitute other carbs for grains.

The certified Master Groomer: Is it worth it?

By Michell Evans
August 31, 2016

“Dear Michell, I have been grooming dogs for many years.  recently I had a new groomer start working at my salon who is interested in getting certified.  I am trying to decide if I am going to get involved.  I say, I have been grooming all this time without it, why do it now?  Does anyone really care if I am certified?  I already have loyal customers who respect me.  What’s in it for me?”  – Mandy K.

As you mature in your career, you look for ways to work smarter, not harder. certification is a simple way to do that. The credential of being a certified groomer is one of the simplest come-backs you can offer to the questions, “Why are you raising your prices?” or “Why are your prices higher than the shop down the street?” consider raising your price with each passed phase of your certification.

Ask yourself, would some outside critiques help improve my styles? often groomers have no idea if their styles are correct. They learned from a groomer who learned from a groomer who taught them to do it this way and so that is how it is done. but is it? Your clients seem happy, but could they be impressed by a better style? could you raise your prices and do one less dog per day for the same income?

Another great reason to go through a certification process is to break the monotony of grooming. You say you have been grooming for many years. Going through a certification process could put new wind in your sails for your work.Certification gives you more to offer to your clients. The learning process is the whole point of any certification. The knowledge is what gives the piece of paper its value. The things that you learn from your studies and practice grooms is where the improvement comes from. You will be a better groomer after certifying. It is pretty much impossible not to be. Your clients will notice the difference in the quality of your grooming and in your confidence. This usually translates into better tips!

One of the most common misconceptions about certifying is that YOU are somehow being judged. This is absurd. Your groom is being judged, not you. Your certifier frankly does not have the authority nor desire to judge you as a person. They look at the groom and determine if the haircut is correct or in need of improvement. That is all.

As long as your head is in the sand about your grooming, your styles will not improve. The only way to know that you need improvement, and where, is to get some suggestions from someone who knows to guide you in the right direction. certification offers this. look at your critique as a tool to know where you need improvement. once you know better, you will do better.

Another misconception is that you will pass all of your exams on the first try. Be prepared to re–take a few of your exams.  It is not uncommon to find out that you are not on the right track with your styles, prep-work, and/or techniques. Your critiques will help you the second time around. Also, after you have taken one written exam, you will have a much better idea of what the questions are like and what to study for the next exam. Re-takes are the absolute best judge of your improvement!

There are several major certifying agencies in the United States; national dog Groomers association of America, international professional Groomers Incorporated, and the international society of Canine Cosmetology to name a few. They are all pretty much the same concept. There are a series of written exams and practical exams. They all have membership fees, study materials to purchase, workshops to attend, and exam fees to be paid.  There are new certifying agencies and programs popping up, like the AKC safety In the salon Certification, and don’t forget cat grooming certification too!

Holiday 2012: Can you foster a lonely cat for the holidays?

Our cats will spend the holidays surrounded by those who love them, in a warm home, with full tummies and plenty of toys. That’s quite a contrast to how shelter cats will spend their holidays. For them, they’re not going to be any different from any other day spent waiting for that one human who will rescue them and give them a forever home.

To help make the holidays brighter for some of these shelter cats, Petfinder.com is sponsoring its annual Foster A Lonely Pet For The holidays program, and asks you to open your heart and home to a cat from a shelter or rescue group this holiday season. For a lot more information and a list of participating shelters and rescue groups, please check out Petfinder.com. staff and volunteers at each organization will be available to answer questions about the fostering process and help select a pet who will be a good match for the foster family’s lifestyle.

First created in 2009, the Foster A Lonely Pet For The holidays program was inspired by Greg Kincaid’s book and movie, A pet dog named Christmas, about a young man who sets out to convince his community to participate in a local animal shelter’s inaugural “Adopt a pet dog for Christmas Program.” Kincaid just released a sequel to this immensely popular book, A Christmas Home, which picks up the story when Todd, the hero of the first book, is twenty-four years old and working at a local animal shelter.

Would you consider fostering a cat for the holidays?

If fostering is not an option for you, I’ll have information for you next week on other ways you can help brighten the holidays for shelter cats.

I would love to do this, but I’m terrified I wouldn’t give it back!! plus my person Diego is very much “this is my house”. So regrettably I can not be a foster parent. but I do donate to my local shelters!

I absolutely understand Rose’s position … but we’ve observed that even a furlough of a week can help out with kennel anxiety in some cats. typically the volunteers at our shelter will do this and the cat comes back less irritable and with a better chance of finding that permanent forever home.

I absolutely agree with you, Lisa, which is why I used to rotate my cats in and out of the Petsmart adoptions area. As Ingrid said, it absolutely depends on the personality of the individual cat, and the rescue group must know which cats would do well with a break and which ones would not.

We would love to but I’m the jealous kind and we don’t have room to keep a foster separate from me. I nearly ripped the last cat that came in her apart. My aunt fosters up to 20 cats at a time.

As someone who has been in cat rescue a long time, and who currently has 20 foster felines (17 kittens and the 3 mama cats who gave birth to them), I am not sure that a lot of cats would benefit from being fostered for the holidays, not like dogs would. Dogs are a whole different energy, social, adaptable, comfortable nearly anywhere. Not true of cats. They take time to depend on and adjust, for the most part. maybe the hope is that the foster family will adopt the cat, of COURSE, but I would only recommend you “foster a lonely cat for the holidays” if the fostering can to continue AFTER the holidays and until the cat gets adopted into its forever home. I mean, how would a cat feel after being freed from his display cage and getting to take pleasure in a home, starting to feel like he was adopted, and then being “rejected” and returned to the cage?

Back when I was with a rescue group who had space in one of the Petsmart adoption areas, I rotated my cats out frequently, and none of my cats stayed in Petsmart a lot more than 9 days (Saturday through the following Sunday to give them 2 weekends and one work week to get adopted). As a group, each member had access to at a lot of two cages, so it was easy to do, and better for the cats. The short-termers got adopted, and the long termers knew they would come “home” in a week or so, plus their foster mommies (us) were there frequently, so they did not feel abandoned. and some of them came home to us and stayed forevernull
