I’ve heard of medication sniffing dogs as well as I’ve really been believing about enrolling Stetson, my black lab, in a Scent tracking – Nose works canine training class. Afterall, we like to phone call Stetson Mr. Sniffers as he seems to be tracking all the dogs in the neighborhood.
I started to do my typical research study as well as came across some unusual canine careers as well as believed to myself perhaps Derby might put that canine nose to great utilize as well as modification careers to a canine sniffer.  The only issue is Derby has difficulty focusing as well as most likely would have problems as a licensed sniffer.
Sniffing Dogs
Anyhow, back to canine sniffers…dog’s have excellent noses as well as as discussed earlier they can work with authorities officers as medication sniffing dogs.  However, did you understand they can likewise sniff out a DVD?  right here are a few other unusual as well as not so unusual things a canine can sniff out:
DVD’s
Explosives
Cancer
Accelerant, Flammable Liquid, Lighter fluid – Arson Dogs
Underwater drowning victims
Cadavers
Missing People

DVD Sniffing Dogs
DVD Sniffer dogs now…that just seems crazy.  exactly how can a canine discover a DVD? as well as even if it did, exactly how would the canine understand if that DVD was a pirated copy?
First of all a canine can be trained to sniff out the polycarbonate utilized in DVD’s.  However, as discussed in the Wired article: “The dogs cannot decipher the difference between pirated as well as authentic DVDs.” The short article does mention: “…Some day, he may be able to train his dogs to alert on subtle chemical differences between authorized DVDs as well as the less expensive knockoffs created by crooks.” now that would be amazing. then once again the recent Oprah short article states that “the typical canine can find scents 10,000 to 100,000 times much better than the typical human.”
Cancer Sniffing Dogs
A second short article I checked out today was on cancer Sniffing Dogs which led to my earlier statement about Derby as well as a possible profession in sniffing.

The canine in this story named Tessy was destined to be a guide Dog…just like Derby.  However, her plans were sidetracked when an infection left her blind in one eye ending any type of possibilities for a profession as a guide Dog.  lucky for Tessy she still had her nose leading her to her second profession as an Ovarian cancer Sniffing Dog.
How does it work?  Tumors release small amounts of chemicals different than those of healthy tissue.   It is this subtle difference that a canine can detect.
Check out the entire short article on Dogs who Can Sniff Out Cancer.
Stetson aka “Mr. Sniffers”
Some of our good friends including Nexxus as well as Nadia are already taking scenting classes as well as we believe that Stetson would delight in a sniffing profession of his own.  ideally this summertime we can enroll Mr Sniffers in training as well as see if he has the stuff to be a true scenting dog.  I’ll keep everybody informed as well as do my finest to chronicle his journey in the world of sniffing!

Do you understand of any type of unual canine careers?  have you taken your canine to scenting class?  I’d like to hear about it in the coments below.
