Benefits of Coconut Oil for Cats

Coconut oil has been huge in human nutrition for rather some time. commonly marketed as a superfood, the special combination of fatty acids in coconut oil may have anti-inflammatory as well as anti-bacterial properties as well as improve the immune system. I’ve been getting a great deal of concerns about whether these benefits apply to cats as well.

Fatty acids as well as cats

Cats only requirement to acquire two necessary fatty acids from their diet: linoleic acid (LA) as well as arachadonic acid (AA), both of which can be discovered in meat. Theoretically, cats can synthesize all other fatty acids from those two. adult cats can benefit from lots of other fats as well as oils for ideal health, especially animal fats such as EPA as well as DHA, although they aren’t necessary. kitties do need DHA for the advancement of the tissues in the brain as well as retina.

How does coconut oil impact cats?

Coconut oil consists of only a about 2% of linoleic  acid. It is mostly made up of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), as well as that’s where the health and wellness benefits come from on the human side.

According to some veterinary experts, MCTs do not taste great to cats. I have not discovered that to be true. Allegra likes coconut oil as a treat “straight up,” as well as I’ve heard lots of reports of feline parents mixing it with food without any issues.

Benefits of coconut oil for cats

If you were to believe whatever you checked out about coconut oil on the internet, you’d believe that there’s nothing this basic oil can’t cure. There are no studies on the benefits of coconut oil in cats that I’m conscious of, however holistic veterinarians have discovered it successful in treating a number of conditions.

I would take declares that coconut oil can remedy cancer as well as thyroid imbalances, contribute to weight loss as well as stop dental illness with a significant grain of salt. However, because of its anti-inflammatory properties, coconut oil has been shown to assist with dermatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, bad bowel absorption, cognitive dysfunction as well as wound healing. It likewise assists improve the immune system, helps digestion as well as enhances skin as well as coat condition when taken internally.

Internal as well as topical utilize of coconut oil

When utilized topically, coconut oil has been shown to speed wound healing in rats, so it stands to reason that it may have the exact same impact on cats. applying a thin layer to a cat’s wound or sore may help. However, keep in mind that anything you put on your feline will a lot of likely be groomed off as well as ingested. Coconut oil is extremely greasy, so you may end up with an oily mess on your furniture as well as rugs even before your feline has a possibility to groom it off.

When provided internally, it’s finest to begin at a extremely low dose as well as work your method up gradually. The normal suggested dose is 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight. I’d begin with 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon as well as slowly boost over a period of a week or two.

Coconut oil is extremely high in fat as well as may not be a great option for cats who are overweight.

Raw Paws organic Virgin Coconut Oil

There are many brands of coconut oil offered (I often utilize it in cooking, it makes a excellent butter substitute!) For utilize as a supplement, look for a therapeutic grade oil, preferably organic, that is sourced responsibly.

We like the Raw Paws brand. Sourced from coconuts naturally grown in the Philippines, it has a shelf life of 2 years, as well as consists of only one ingredient: USDA licensed organic Coconut Oil. It is cold-pressed as well as unrefined, not bleached or deodorized like some more affordable oils.

If you’re not familiar with coconut oil, it’s crucial to comprehend that it will liquefy at 76° F. Whether liquid or solid, the benefits stay the same. I’ve discovered that Allegra likes it much better when it’s melted.

Allegra gets 1/4 teaspoon twice a day. I location it in a little meal as well as she licks it clean within seconds. Some cats will lick it ideal off the spoon.

Study Confirms that dry Food boosts danger of Diabetes for Cats

There are numerous reasons why cats ought to never eat dry food. dry food is the equivalent of junk food for cats, it is the leading cause of many urinary tract problems, as well as it is accountable for the obesity issue among cats. dry food has likewise been implicated as one of the contributing elements to diabetes, which is reaching epidemic proportions. 1 in 50 cats may be affected, with overweight cats being at enhanced risk.

A new research study conducted at the Swedish university of agricultural Sciences confirms that typical weight cats who take in a dry food diet plan are at an enhanced danger of diabetes mellitus.

Normal weight cats who take in a dry food diet plan are at an enhanced danger of diabetes.

Researchers utilized a web-based questionnaire in a case–control study. An invitation to take part was sent to owners of 1,369 diabetic cats as well as 5,363 manage cats. The survey contained concerns associated to the cat’s breed, age, sex, neutering status, body condition, housing, gain access to to the outdoors, activity level, diet, eating behavior, feeding routine, general health, stressful events, other animals in the household, medications, as well as vaccination status.

The reaction rate was 35% for the diabetic group as well as 32% for the manage group. indoor confinement, being a greedy eater, as well as being overweight were connected with an enhanced danger of diabetes. In cats evaluated by owners as being typical weight, there was an association between eating predominantly dry food as well as an enhanced danger of diabetes.

These findings most likely don’t come as a surprise to veterinarians as well as feline guardians who comprehend the connection between diet plan as well as diabetes, however it is motivating to lastly see some solid research study that supports this knowledge.

Obesity is not the only danger element for diabetes.

“Through our research study we discovered that while obesity is a extremely essential as well as popular danger element for diabetes mellitus in cats, there is likewise an enhanced danger of diabetes among normal-weight cats consuming a dry food diet,” Malin Öhlund, DVM, a Ph.D trainee of the department of medical services at the Swedish university of agricultural science as well as lead researcher on the research study told Veterinary method News. “This correlation, compared to normal-weight cats on a wet food diet, is a new as well as fascinating discovering that warrants even more research, as a dry food diet plan is typically fed to cats around the world.”

I’m hoping that this research study will be commonly published as well as motivate feline guardians who are not yet persuaded that cats ought to never eat dry food to rethink the diet plan they feed their feline household members.

You can discover the full research study results here.

While I agree that dry food is doubtful for cats as well as that wet/raw may be the much better choice, this research study does not wrap up or show anything. It is only a summary of survey results sent in by owners, not veterinary professionals, as well as it is not a scientific, medical study. All it states is that even more investigation is warranted. I desire the author to reevaluate their misinterpretation of the research study as well as to look for other sources to support the point.

I question if this holds true for Halo brand. It utilizes none of the “meat meal” or by products nor does it utilize grains.
My cats were increased on grain totally free wet however someday just just refused to it any type of type of wet food. Drives me crazy as I understand wet food is much better for them. perhaps next step will be to try raw.

It’s true for all dry foods, regardless of brand. Carbs are carbs. Grains are not the only source of carbs, as well as numerous producers of grain-free diets substitute other carbs for grains.

The certified Master Groomer: Is it worth it?

By Michell Evans
August 31, 2016

“Dear Michell, I have been grooming dogs for many years.  recently I had a new groomer start working at my salon who is interested in getting certified.  I am trying to decide if I am going to get involved.  I say, I have been grooming all this time without it, why do it now?  Does anyone really care if I am certified?  I already have loyal customers who respect me.  What’s in it for me?”  – Mandy K.

As you mature in your career, you look for ways to work smarter, not harder. certification is a simple way to do that. The credential of being a certified groomer is one of the simplest come-backs you can offer to the questions, “Why are you raising your prices?” or “Why are your prices higher than the shop down the street?” consider raising your price with each passed phase of your certification.

Ask yourself, would some outside critiques help improve my styles? often groomers have no idea if their styles are correct. They learned from a groomer who learned from a groomer who taught them to do it this way and so that is how it is done. but is it? Your clients seem happy, but could they be impressed by a better style? could you raise your prices and do one less dog per day for the same income?

Another great reason to go through a certification process is to break the monotony of grooming. You say you have been grooming for many years. Going through a certification process could put new wind in your sails for your work.Certification gives you more to offer to your clients. The learning process is the whole point of any certification. The knowledge is what gives the piece of paper its value. The things that you learn from your studies and practice grooms is where the improvement comes from. You will be a better groomer after certifying. It is pretty much impossible not to be. Your clients will notice the difference in the quality of your grooming and in your confidence. This usually translates into better tips!

One of the most common misconceptions about certifying is that YOU are somehow being judged. This is absurd. Your groom is being judged, not you. Your certifier frankly does not have the authority nor desire to judge you as a person. They look at the groom and determine if the haircut is correct or in need of improvement. That is all.

As long as your head is in the sand about your grooming, your styles will not improve. The only way to know that you need improvement, and where, is to get some suggestions from someone who knows to guide you in the right direction. certification offers this. look at your critique as a tool to know where you need improvement. once you know better, you will do better.

Another misconception is that you will pass all of your exams on the first try. Be prepared to re–take a few of your exams.  It is not uncommon to find out that you are not on the right track with your styles, prep-work, and/or techniques. Your critiques will help you the second time around. Also, after you have taken one written exam, you will have a much better idea of what the questions are like and what to study for the next exam. Re-takes are the absolute best judge of your improvement!

There are several major certifying agencies in the United States; national dog Groomers association of America, international professional Groomers Incorporated, and the international society of Canine Cosmetology to name a few. They are all pretty much the same concept. There are a series of written exams and practical exams. They all have membership fees, study materials to purchase, workshops to attend, and exam fees to be paid.  There are new certifying agencies and programs popping up, like the AKC safety In the salon Certification, and don’t forget cat grooming certification too!

It is so worth it, Mandy!✂

Holiday 2012: Can you foster a lonely cat for the holidays?

Our cats will spend the holidays surrounded by those who love them, in a warm home, with full tummies and plenty of toys. That’s quite a contrast to how shelter cats will spend their holidays. For them, they’re not going to be any different from any other day spent waiting for that one human who will rescue them and give them a forever home.

To help make the holidays brighter for some of these shelter cats, Petfinder.com is sponsoring its annual Foster A Lonely Pet For The holidays program, and asks you to open your heart and home to a cat from a shelter or rescue group this holiday season. For a lot more information and a list of participating shelters and rescue groups, please check out Petfinder.com. staff and volunteers at each organization will be available to answer questions about the fostering process and help select a pet who will be a good match for the foster family’s lifestyle.

First created in 2009, the Foster A Lonely Pet For The holidays program was inspired by Greg Kincaid’s book and movie, A pet dog named Christmas, about a young man who sets out to convince his community to participate in a local animal shelter’s inaugural “Adopt a pet dog for Christmas Program.” Kincaid just released a sequel to this immensely popular book, A Christmas Home, which picks up the story when Todd, the hero of the first book, is twenty-four years old and working at a local animal shelter.

Would you consider fostering a cat for the holidays?

If fostering is not an option for you, I’ll have information for you next week on other ways you can help brighten the holidays for shelter cats.

I absolutely understand Rose’s position … but we’ve observed that even a furlough of a week can help out with kennel anxiety in some cats. typically the volunteers at our shelter will do this and the cat comes back less irritable and with a better chance of finding that permanent forever home.

I absolutely agree with you, Lisa, which is why I used to rotate my cats in and out of the Petsmart adoptions area. As Ingrid said, it absolutely depends on the personality of the individual cat, and the rescue group must know which cats would do well with a break and which ones would not.

We would love to but I’m the jealous kind and we don’t have room to keep a foster separate from me. I nearly ripped the last cat that came in her apart. My aunt fosters up to 20 cats at a time.

As someone who has been in cat rescue a long time, and who currently has 20 foster felines (17 kittens and the 3 mama cats who gave birth to them), I am not sure that a lot of cats would benefit from being fostered for the holidays, not like dogs would. Dogs are a whole different energy, social, adaptable, comfortable nearly anywhere. Not true of cats. They take time to depend on and adjust, for the most part. maybe the hope is that the foster family will adopt the cat, of COURSE, but I would only recommend you “foster a lonely cat for the holidays” if the fostering can to continue AFTER the holidays and until the cat gets adopted into its forever home. I mean, how would a cat feel after being freed from his display cage and getting to take pleasure in a home, starting to feel like he was adopted, and then being “rejected” and returned to the cage?

Back when I was with a rescue group who had space in one of the Petsmart adoption areas, I rotated my cats out frequently, and none of my cats stayed in Petsmart a lot more than 9 days (Saturday through the following Sunday to give them 2 weekends and one work week to get adopted). As a group, each member had access to at a lot of two cages, so it was easy to do, and better for the cats. The short-termers got adopted, and the long termers knew they would come “home” in a week or so, plus their foster mommies (us) were there frequently, so they did not feel abandoned. and some of them came home to us and stayed forevernull

Happiness Is The Cat’s Meow

how many of you bought Christmas presents for your cats, only to have them turn up their little noses at them, or play with them once or twice, and then ignore them? I’ve done this more than I care to admit. I don’t even know why I even buy Allegra and Ruby toys. Our cat playroom (known in most homes as the family room) is already filled with more cat products than your average pet store! but there’s just something about Christmas that makes me want to get them something special, wrap it for them, unwrap it with them, and, each year, hope that this time, it’s going to be something they’re really going to like.

Well, it finally happened. I hit the jackpot with the Cat’s Meow toy. Whoever designed this toy definitely understands cats. This clever toy features a “mouse” on the end of a wand that is attached to a motor and covered by a yellow round cloth. The mouse goes around in a circle, with only the “tail” peeking out from under the fabric. The motor randomly changes speed and direction, and won’t stop even when the cat pounces and “catches” the mouse.

The girls absolutely love this toy. When I first set it out, Ruby started to play with it immediately. Allegra, being the more cautious of the two, watched from a slight distance. It took her about 15 minutes before she started to bat at the moving mouse, but once she got the hang of it, she had a blast. The girls played together with the toy for over an hour on Christmas Eve, and probably would have kept playing all night if I had left the toy out. When I brought it back out Christmas morning, they went right back to it, and have done so every time I’ve brought it out since.

The toy seems to be reasonably well made. Time will tell how long it lasts. It uses three C batteries, and at the rate the girls are using it, it will probably go through a lot of batteries, but to me, that’s a small price to pay for the happiness this toy is bringing them, and me. watching them have fun with this toy was my best Christmas present this year.

Enjoy watching the girls play with their new toy!

The Cat’s Meow is available from Amazon and other retailers. It does not come with batteries, so make sure you have C batteries at the ready.

Mews and Nips will return next Saturday.

It’s good to hear all the success stories about this cat toy; however, I was concerned to read the post about the danger to long-haired kitties. I read lots of negative customer comments on Amazon.com and so will not be purchasing it for my kitties. On your recommendation, I did get them a DaBird which is terrific to use before breakfast & dinner — in the wild they have to chase that bird down before they get it handed to them in a warmed ceramic dish!

That is so wonderful to see somebody adopting a senior cat. Sammy as well as his dad are both so fortunate. My 2 torties, who I have had since they were 2-3 months old, both turn 17 this month.

Sammy is so cute, as well as I’m so delighted he has gotten a excellent home, in his later years..What a great person to take a older baby! I have a tuxedo also..His name is Jack, alias Jack-ack-ack…I got him out of a hot cars and truck in August of 2001..He was most likely 6 weeks at the time, so he will be 20 soon also..I hope your kitty as well as you have many more wonderful years together..

I’m delighted Sammy got a great home. It’s so obvious exactly how much he likes his new daddy. The kitty in the video reminds me of my Kiki. She is always determined to get what she wants as well as this cats almost appears like her.

Mews and Nips: Cats for hire

best pals LA’s working cat program gives cats who are not bonded to humans a chance at being placed with adopters who are looking for natural rodent deterrents for enclosed properties such as barns, warehouses, churches, factories or other facilities. This program is a win-win on a lot of different levels: shelters benefit because it makes more room for socialized, friendly cats who need homes, adopters benefit because they can save their home from rodent damage without spending a lot of money, but most of all, the cats benefit, because the program allows them to safely live in an environment where they can thrive. For more about this wonderful program, check out the best pals Blog.

If you missed any of the stories featured on the conscious cat this week, here’s a recap: on Sunday, we told you to just say no to drama, on Monday, we featured the first in our four part series about Ruby’s trip to the dentist (diagnosis and choosing a veterinary dentist,) on Tuesday, we reviewed Nature’s cat litter mats,on Wednesday, we featured part two in our series about Ruby’s trip to the dentist (preparation,) and on Friday, we featured part three in our series about Ruby’s trip to the dentist (our day at animal Dentistry and Oral Surgery.) and don’t forget to enter our giveaway for a Berkley Bestiary Collection prize pack from Galison!

The kitty in today’s video uses some of the most gentle wake up tactics I’ve ever seen – so sweet!

Have a terrific weekend!

Dog Adoption Labrador Retriever guideline mix

This post may consist of affiliate links. We may earn money or products from the companies pointed out in this post.
Here at Puppy In training were back advocates of pet dog adoption.  It’s been a while considering that I talked about the Cuddly Canines Rescue and as lots of of you already know I used to volunteer as a foster parent for Cuddly Canines.  I’m sure I’ll volunteer again in the future when I have a lot more complimentary time in my schedule.  Anyhow, I went ahead and checked out their site to take a look at the puppies and dogs they have for adoption.  It looks like their web site is under maintenance, but they still have all their adoptable dogs posted at petfinder.com.
One litter of dogs caught my attention…the Labrador Retriever guideline Mix.  It looks like they have four lab guideline mixes from the same litter.  The one that caught my attention was a little female puppy named Madison with a heart shaped marking on her left side.  Take a look at the picture:

See the great heart shaped mark on her side.  It kind of reminds me of the story about the little puppy named Heart-kun.  another heart shaped marked puppy.

If you’d like to see the other puppies in the Labrador Retriever guideline mix litter than check out the Cuddly Canines web site and check out their list of puppies.  If you’re interested in adoption then check out their Cuddly Application for pet dog adoptions.
